Mesh networking module simplifies Thread and ZigBee

The module is suitable for an array of mesh networking applications, including home and building automation, connected lighting, smart metering, security systems and other IoT platforms.

“Our customers rely on our deep understanding of mesh technology and RF certification.” said Skip Ashton, VP of IoT software at Silicon Labs. “They also appreciate that we offer the tools and stacks they need to simplify the development process, as well as an upgrade path that safeguards their IoT products from being stranded on older technologies and standards.”

Mighty Gecko modules and wireless SoCs have similar technical features and application programming interfaces. According to the company, this hardware and software compatibility make it easy to migrate from modules to SoCs while enabling developers to preserve their investments in tools and software with little to no system redesign.

The module comprises of a 2.4GHz Mighty Gecko transceiver with a 40MHz ARM Cortex-M4 core, 25kbyte flash and 32kbyte RAM. The transceiver consumes 9.8mA in receive mode and 8.2mA at 0dBm when in transmit mode, with a transmit power of up to 10dBm.

The MGM111 complies with the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and will be pre-certified for compliance with FCC, IC, CE, RCM and KC regulatory requirements. It comes in a 12.9 x 15mm package that is footprint- and pin-compatible with the BGM111 Blue Gecko module supporting Bluetooth low energy technology.

The module is supported by the company’s Simplicity Studio development platform, a suite of development and debugging tools that are claimed to accelerate IoT product design. Key tools include AppBuilder, Network Analyser and Energy Profiler.
