Imagination announces MIPS collaboration agreement with Sequans

The MIPS family of CPU IP is a portfolio of low-power, high-efficiency 32/64-bit processor architectures and cores and are suitable for use in LTE, LTE Advanced, LTE Advanced Pro and 5G applications. They are used widely in mobile broadband as well as IoT products that are deployed on global LTE networks and, crucially, they can support a broad range of configurable features enabling CPU cores to be optimised for specific applications.

For example, when it comes to communications processing in LTE modems, small size and power consumption, latency and deterministic responsiveness are critical to system performance. MIPS CPUs can be tuned to optimise the characteristics for real-time embedded processing.

Commenting on the agreement Bertrand Debray, COO, Sequans, said, “As device designers create new LTE devices, many of them are looking to pre-integrated, pre-tested, and pre-certified MIPS-based LTE platforms and modules to reduce development risk and time.”

Steve Evans, VP of MIPS business development, Imagination Technologies, said, “LTE modems are a sweet spot for the MIPS architecture, where it can provide demonstrable benefits in terms of reduced power consumption and enhanced performance.”
