Leti to unveil wearable device to measure relaxation

“Leti’s manufacturing partners will develop our brain-computer and mental-focus technologies into full hardware-software concepts,” said Coralie Gallis, business development manager. “They will be able to develop a range of wellness devices and wearable sports- and fitness-related devices, such as wrist bands and chest straps.”

Using electroencephalography to record the brain’s alpha-wave activity, the headgear called RELAX measures the level of alert relaxation with an embedded electrode system that does not require the sensors to be attached to the scalp.

Medically certification-ready, user-friendly, affordable and non-invasive, it lets users monitor their own level of attention and enhance mindfulness. The RELAX app, which is connected to the head device, provides live tracking of alpha-wave activity.

Future uses for RELAX include: brain fitness (neuro-feedback) which is a stress-management and sleep-enhancement technique; brain-computer interface to command and control objects through thought; and mental focus monitoring for tracking concentration and level of attention in high-stakes occupational situations.

Applications may include virtual reality, video games and remote assistance of disabled persons, as well as air- and road-traffic control and digital-learning tools.
