The microelectromechanical system (MEMS) based collimated light scanner scans a holographic element that is embedded in the lens of the smartglasses. The company says the projected image is crisp, bright, private, and visible in direct sunlight.
Dr. Stefan Finkbeiner, CEO of Bosch Sensortec, commented, "The Smartglasses Light Drive system is the smallest and lightest product on the market today and is, therefore, able to turn almost any regular spectacles into smartglasses. By eliminating distracting phone usage, smartglasses can help improve driving safety and reduce the impulse of users to constantly check their mobile devices for notifications or messages."
Bosch Light Drive is compatible with curved and corrective lenses. The turnkey system is small and light, measuring approximately 45-75 mm x 5-10 mm x 8 mm and weighing less than 10 grams.
Bosch has designed and built this solution in-house, a decision it says will ensure consistent high quality, reliability, and performance. The smartglasses module includes several sensor solutions, including Bosch’s smart sensor BHI260, its barometric pressure sensor BMP388, and its BMM150 magnetometer. These sensors enable intuitive user interface features such as multi-tap functions on the frame.
The Bosch Light Drive solution will be available to high-volume manufacturers in 2021.
