Action plan published by the Royal Academy of Engineering to inspire future engineers at the Houses of Parliament

Informed by research conducted for This Is Engineering by YouGov in which young people aged 13-18 were questioned about career aspirations and interests, the plan contains 10 actionable ideas to increase the numbers of young people going into engineering careers.

The research found that 63% of those questioned wanted a job that connected to their current passions and showed that young people were more interested in discussing their current interests with parents than future career aspirations, choosing the Internet as their primary source for careers information over parents and teachers.

The 10-point plan includes calls for increased availability of online careers guides, the setting up of ‘taster days’ at local businesses, funding for students needing to travel or stay away from home for effective work experience opportunities, and increased participation of MPs in constituency career events.

Michael Fallon MP commented: "“Engineering is vital to every aspect of life and will only become more so as technologies continue to develop. I would encourage all schools in Sevenoaks to work in partnership with local businesses to promote career fairs and follow the guidelines in the This is the Future of Engineering plan on how to run a successful event.”
